MANAGE FOOD WASTE DIRECTORY
Directory of technologies for on-site production of animal feed from food waste:

Introduction
A range of source separated food organics can be used as animal food as livestock have the ability to eat plant materials or foodstuffs that humans will not consume. Food organics can be processed to meet the nutritional requirements of targeted animal groups or to provide supplementary animal feed. As processing technologies and nutritional value becomes more specific and complex, establishment and capital costs, operating costs and the value of the end product tend to increase.

Technologies for on-site processing of food organics for use as animal feeds are listed below.

Health Regulations
NOTE:
There are a number of health and quality issues that regulate the application of food organics as animal food. These regulations aim to prevent the development and/or spread of several serious animal diseases including BSE (Mad Cow Disease) and foot and mouth disease.
Regulations include, but are not limited to the NSW Stock Foods Act, the Stock Food Regulations and the Stock Diseases Act that require (for example):

  • That NO tissue or blood from any animal or bird can be fed to pigs.
  • That NO food waste can be fed to pigs unless the material has been rendered or sterilised. This is due to the risk of potential transmission of foot and mouth disease and other viral diseases.
  • That NO meat products (including tissue, blood or feathers) can be fed to ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, deer etc.). This is due to the risk of bovine spongiform encephalophathy (BSE) also known as Mad Cow Disease.

More information can be found in the report 'Food Organics Processing Options for New South Wales' available free to download.

NSW DPI also has a number of Primefact sheets (formerly “Agnotes”) that cover these issues:

Primefact 311: Dangers in feeding waste material to livestock (replaces Agnote DAI-181)
Primefact 313: Feed controls - stopping BSE (Mad Cow Disease) (replaces Agnote DAI-227)
Primefact 318: Manufactured stock food requirements
