MANAGE FOOD WASTE DIRECTORY
Collection containers for food waste:
Introduction
A range of purpose specific bins are available for containment of
food waste on-site either for subsequent processing on-site, or
for collection and transport to a centralised processing facility.
Such bins are designed to enable less frequent food waste collection
by managing risks such as the potential for pest attraction or odour
generation, and potential biosecurity risks associated with the
waste materials. Where less frequent collection can occur safely
without causing problems this may reduce the cost of waste disposal
for some businesses, and increase the potential viability of collecting
food waste separately for reprocessing.
Food waste specific collection containers:
BiobiN [Australia, USA, Asia]

Functional description of the technology (what it does):
BiobiN is an aerated organic waste containment and collection
bin that blows air through the contained material whilst effectively
managing odour by treating exhaust gas with a biofilter. BiobiN
can be used to initiate the composting process whilst awaiting collection
for emptying at a centralised processing facility. A bin exchange
system is used to provide a clean replacement bin when a full bin
is collected.
The BiobiN has a blower unit which pushes air into distribution
pipework in the base of the container to aerate the contained material,
and sucks process gas from the top of the container to circulate
through a condenser and biofilter. BiobiN controls odours
whilst enabling less frequent collection of putrescible organic
waste materials.
BiobiN requires access to a centralised processing facility
that can receive and process the materials, and a lifting arrangement
to collect full bins and to tip the material out of the bin at the
facility for processing.
Performance benefits claimed of the technology:
— Enables food waste to be collected and stored onsite for periods
from a week to 5 weeks, essentially reducing the need for frequent
food waste collections/ pickups (reducing collection cost and carbon
footprint);
— Effectively manages odour;
— Initiates the composting process onsite;
— Provides a solution for material that would otherwise end
up in general waste;
— Provides an ethical and responsible solution to remote area
waste management (ie versus mortality
pits, mining site landfills etc).
