Depackaging technologies:

Introduction
F ood waste depackaging equipment which is capable of separating solid and liquid organic wastes from the packaging material in order to enable reprocessing of the clean, separated organic fraction via anaerobic digestion or composting; and to increase recovery of the packaging materials for recycling..

The viability of this approach is dependent upon the availability of suitable centralised processing facilities that are able to accept such organic waste material.

Some technologies may be suitable for on-site application by food processing, food service, or property management sectors. Such technologies are listed here. Depackaging technlogies are also available for installation at centralised commercial organics processing facilities. The UK agency Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has published a review of depackaging technlogies such centralised applications, this is freely available online.

Functional description of the technology (what it does):
The Liquipress handles packaged food and beverage items to separate the liquid content from the packaging. A compaction blade presses the product against a regulated door maintaining the back pressure on the waste product while allowing ejection of the de-liquified container.
Performance benefits claimed of the technology:
Removes 90% of liquid content from packaging.

Types of material able to process: Non combustible liquids container in non pressurized containers. Types of material NOT able to process: Combustible liquids, non combustible solids and items in pressurized containers.

Inputs/consumables required:
Electricity to run unit and the pump required to move extracted liquid to a containment vessel.
Ancillary equipment:
Conveyor feed, hand loading or bin lifter for bin loading.
