Vermiculture processing technologies involve the use of selected species of earthworms for processing organic materials.

Microorganisms break down organic materials into simpler molecules which are consumed by earthworms. Through the action of microorganisms and earthworms under mesophilic conditions (5-35°C), organic materials are converted into a soil-like product called vermicast.

Vermicast usually contains good levels of plant nutrients, making it an excellent soil conditioner and additive to horticultural potting mixes, for example.

The Recycled Organics Unit has produced a number of valuable resources on vermiculture technologies:

  • Best Practice Guideline to Managing On-site Vermiculture Technologies
This industry best practice guide on the management of on-site vermiculture systems is now available. This guide provides an excellent overview of vermiculture science and role of vermiculture in waste management. The guide also gives practical information as to the development of such a system including feedstock preparation, monitoring and maintenance procedures and use of the vermicast end product.
