The Report Persistent Herbicides Risk Management Program is now available.

The report provides an overview of the persistent herbicides risk management program, including an overview of the recycled organics industry and the threat to the industry posed by the persistent herbicides identified. The Recycled Organics Unit has identified and evaluated the persistence of these herbicides under Australian commercial composting conditions.

This report provides access to resources and services to manage the potential risks of herbicide contamination of compost in the short term and is available to download for free.

This report details the findings from the applied composting trial to confirm the persistence or otherwise of three specific herbicides: clopyralid, picloram and triclopyr. Whilst there is no evidence of these chemicals to date in garden organics composts in Australia, clopyralid and picloram were shown to be capable of persisting under NSW composting industry best practice aerobic windrow composting; triclopyr was shown to effectively degrade. The report recommends action strategies for both industry and Government to address these risks.
