The report Evaluation
of Size Reduction Technologies for On-site Organics
Management Systems is now available.
This report provides an evaluation
of size reduction technologies currently available
to enable more effective on-site compostable organics
processing.
It is targeted towards commercial
and industrial sector enterprises, multi-unit dwellings
and government institutions and organisations, as
these sectors display significant potential to utilise
such technology to improve their organics management
practices.

On-site processing technologies, such as composting and vermiculture,
can convert a wide range of organics (after size reduction)
into recycled organics products including composts, mulches
and vermicast. Limiting the development of this industry is
the lack of information relating to efficient and effective
size reduction technologies, which are required to reduce
the particle size of organic materials so they can be efficiently
processed in on-site.
The scope of this report is to provide an evaluation of on-site
size reduction technologies for a range of compostable organics
raw materials. To address this need, this study was performed
to address the following objectives:
• Evaluate and document the performance of a range of
size reduction technologies that are currently available and
suitable for mid-scale on-site C&I sector use;
• Identify the compostable organic materials which can
be effectively size reduced by each technology;
• Provide performance data with regard to the use of
these technologies for the different organic materials trialled;
and
• Identify significant occupational health and safety
issues associated with the use of these technologies.
